Kathie Winkle for Broadhurst Pottery, Set of 2 Dinner plates, "Autumn Glen", C.1970s
This is a very collectible Broadhurst Staffordshire 2 Dinner Plates in the "Autumn Glen" pattern designed by Kathie Winkle, C.1970's.
Kathie Winkle joined James Broadhurst & Sons Ltd., Portland Pottery, Fenton around 1950, initially as a paintress, but by 1958 she was producing her own designs. She soon became responsible for all Broadhurst’s pattern designs from then until the mid 1970's. All designs from the late 1950's were printed on the ware by semi-automatic rubber stamping machines. The designs comprised two parts - an outline in black created by the stamping process with bright colors then hand painted in the spaces before the wares were glazed. The new geometric patterns were a clear departure from the more usual floral motifs found on tableware.
As machine decorating techniques began to take over from hand painting in the mid 1970's, Kathie Winkle stopped designing and her patterns were slowly phased out.
Good vintage condition with some utensil marks that can be visible under a certain angle only. No chips or cracks. Pattern vivid and intact. There are slight variations in the depth of pattern color but this is normal with these pieces, and is not an indication of wear.
The plates measure approx. 9 1/2"in diameter with the "Ironstone Broadhurst Made in England Kathie Winkle Autumn Glen" back stamp (for full back stamp please see picture).
