Rare Wedgwood Prairie Flowers Dinner Plate, Made in England c.1920s-1940s
In an early advertisement for this pattern, Wedgwood proudly announced that Prairie Flowers was the company's "first design from an entirely American inspiration." The ad went on to say that the artist had "traveled to the West to see one of America's glories-the wildflowers of the plains and prairies in the early Spring."
The original version was adapted with minor changes, mostly to edging and center treatments, and was sold through 1932. The pattern was most likely withdrawn along with others when the number of patterns was reduced at the outset of World War II.
Beautiful turquoise trim edges different flowers in blue, lavender, scarlet, and yellow-green. Wildflowers include bluebells, poppies, primrose, asters & cornflowers.
The back is marked Wedgwood made in England Prairie Flowers W1758.
Measures 10 5/8" in diameter.
Excellent condition with no chips, cracks or crazing.
